Video 18 Nov 7 notes

Went to AS220 in Providence, RI last weekend and finally started a laser-cutting project, which is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Since so much of my work consists of repetitive, modular shapes, machines like laser-cutters and rapid prototypers have intrigued me for a long time. With a device like this, you can make many copies of your own shapes and turn them into a kind of sculptural lego set.

Initially I had only intended to play around with the machine in a free-form way, but after seeing it’s potential, I immediately felt compelled to integrate laser-cut parts into an existing commission I was working on, which nearly made me miss my deadline, but ultimately was worth the risk. Much thanks to Jenine Bressner for showing me the shop and teaching me how to use the machine.

In the coming days I’ll post additional images of the laser cut objects as they are assembled.
